Design of a Dual-Purpose Patch Antenna for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Induced RF Heating for Small Animal Hyperthermia

The popularity of patch antennas in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has reduced because the large size required for antennae to resonate. Since antenna is associated with wavelength and wavelengths that are used MRI substantially large, used. Methods reducing sizes have been proposed; however, these methods reduce penetration depth uniformity. In this study, we area by 30% folding ground planes a zigzag pattern. produced two main resonant modes. first mode uniform field was MRI. second strong focused electric (|E|)-field, which radiofrequency (RF) heating. Furthermore, explored use combination aligned along z-axis provide circular flux density (|B1|) at 300 MHz, corresponds Larmor frequency 7T system. addition, configuration will be RF heating hyperthermia operating 1.06 GHz. target object small rat insertion colon cancer. Using proposed configuration, achieved |B1|-field uniformity standard deviation 3% temperature increment 1 °C mimic cancer tissue.
